One thing i personally find to be a certain with most bands i played with, or bands i know up close, is that they overthink the whole writing process. What do i mean by that? Bare in mind this is just a personal opinion and not a fact as a whole! When you start a song of course you want that song to sound perfect with a great chorus, and great lyrics... But in music, things don't happen to work that way. Let me explain: The greatest songs ever written took five minutes to write. And in many cases the songwriter wasn't even sure if it was good enough. Some of the most iconic songs ever where binned after they were finished. What does that tell you?
The more you complicate, the more the song looses what the song needs. Which is simplicity. That's what i found after years of playing music. Because good and bad music is all about what the listener feels when hearing it. What may be rubbish to you, may be perfection for the person next to you. I remember taking 2 months to write a song. And in some cases even longer, much longer. I could never make my mind up. These days, i find it all much easier, because i no longer overthink the writing process. I just let it happen and i don't bin any songs. Any!!! i start with an idea and keep on working on it without making a big fuss about it. I keep it organic and spontaneous. And let the listener decide if it's good or bad. I know that it is good for me and for this band!

Roubar. Original. E eu gosto.
We don’t know how good or bad our music is to you (the listener). We make the music that we love to hear. And we enjoy doing it. Templo Dos Martyrs is not trying to sound like anyone, or copying anyone, or any genres. Even if, for some, we sound like a particular band. Which i personally don’t believe so... This band’s goal, was always about making music, writing fucking songs. Not reinventing the fucking wheel. So why wasting time arguing if the music is good or bad? It is what it is!.. It is what we feel and hear. It feels right to us, and specially to me (N.E.) as the main writer of the band. T.D.M was never started to become anything other than what it is. A band that writes songs and tells stories. Not searching for fame, and certainly not about money. Remember this is a band that writes and sings in Portuguese, that alone is enough to prove my point.
If you enjoy listening to us, great. If not, well that great too. There are countless famous bands out there with a big reputation, that i find hideous. Mentalidade do caralho...
I wish i could write music with the same intensity and feel Thurston Moore does. So inspirational. His approach to music, and one that i totally love. Is that his music sounds like art. Music but very arty. If you know what i mean...? I personally don't like to overthink my music. And i am a big believer of keeping the first riff or vocal melody idea i come up with. Because music to me, is spiritual thing. In a way, it is... So if something comes out. And it's you. Your vibe. Your inspiration. Why not leave it as it is?
Sometimes when you change things around too much. You don't make it better. You make it complicated. You may even destroy what was perfect to start with. |
